Upma Kozhukattai is a healthy, filling and satisfying South Indian breakfast, which is also enjoyed as a mid-day snacks, tiffin items to serve with some spicy coconut chutney. This steamed dumplings is prepared usually with rice rava or else with rice flour. And this steamed dish is also called as Kara pidikozhukattais as well. I love to replicate some traditional South Indian dishes with some healthy stuffs in it. Hence i opted for a millet dumplings aka gluten free upma kozhukattai. This is quite a healthy version of steamed dumplings which is seriously loaded with protein rich black-eyed peas beans. Obviously you cant miss this incredible protein rich to try if you are looking for a super healthy dinner or breakfast for week days.
Am running this week's blogging marathon with Steamed dishes as theme, after two interesting steam cooked dishes, am finishing this week's theme with this steamed millet dumplings.Millets are quite healthier than rice, hence i prepared this dish with kodomillets. If you love to give a twist to your usual upma kozhukattais, dont hesitate a second to grab this dish to make without any fail at home.Served with a coconut chutney or with a spicy side dish, one can finish their breakfast, dinner or snacks without any fuss. Quite a healthy meal to indulge definitely.
1cup Kodomillet/Varagu Arisi (washed)
1/4cup Cooked Black-eyed Peas
1no Green chilly (chopped)
1tsp Ginger (minced)
1tsp Mustard seeds+urad dal
1/2tsp Channadal
3nos Dry red chillies
1/4tsp Asafoetida powder
Few Curry leaves
2+1/2cups Water
1tbsp Oil
Salt
Heat the oil, let splutters the mustard seeds, urad dal,channadal,dry red chillies,fry until they turns brown.
Add now the grated ginger,curry leaves and chopped green chillies,sauté until the onions turns transculent.
Immediately add the salt, cook for few seconds, add the water and bring everything to boil..
Add now the kodomillet, cooked black eyes peas and stir continously until the kodomillet gets well cooked,put off the stove.
Let it cool completely.
Make medium sized balls from the upma and steam cook them in cooker for 7-10minutes.

I like the way black eyed peas are popping out of kozhukattai. Addition of the peas makes it hearty.

The addition of legume to the kozhukattai to make it more nutritious is brilliant. In Andhra. we add moong or chana dal to this kind of dish.
That is a nice way of increasing the protein in breakfast. Love your version of upma kolukattai with millet.

I saw kodo millet in Indian stores but did not know what to make with it. This varagu arisi upma looking absolutely delightful. healthy and yummy.
