Vegan Butterbeans Tomato Kurma/Butterbeans Thakkali Masala Kurma

Butterbeans kurma makes an extremely delicious side dish to enjoy with some rotis, idlies, dosas or else simply with mildly spiced pulaos. My love for butterbeans always pull me to cook some fingerlicking dishes with this ultimate beans. Cooked with anything, this beans makes extremely delicious dishes. Though i have already cooked many dishes with this beans, this tomato loaded butter beans kurma will definitely please some hungry tummies easily when served along with your favourite dishes like rotis, rice etc. This tomato kurma with butter beans is one of my mom's signature dish. My dad loves butterbeans in anything, obviously my mom do this kurma often to please him.And i learned this fingerlicking aromatic kurma dish from her. And am dedicating this dish as mother's day special to my mom.

Butter Beans Tomato Kurma


Nutritionally, butter beans are an excellent source  of protein and contains many other important vitamins and minerals. They are low in total fat and are gluten free, obviously dont forget to add this nutritious beans often in your diet. As much as like other beans, these beans are good source of dietary fibers which helps a lot for easy digestion. Cooked with rice or as gravies or else simply tempered and served as evening snacks, butter beans are simply awesome to enjoy. I always have a packet of these beans and my freezer is loaded with these sort of soaked and freezed beans for easy cooking.

Thakkali Butterbeans Kurma

2cups Butterbeans (cooked)
6nos Tomatoes
2nos Onion(chopped)
2nos Bayleaves
1no Cinnamon stick
1/2tsp Fennel seeds
2nos Green chillies (slit opened)
1tsp Ginger-garlic paste
1/2tsp Red chilly powder
1/4tsp Turmeric powder
1tbsp Coriander powder
Few curry leaves
Chopped coriander leaves
Salt
Oil

To Grind:
1/4cup Grated coconut
1tsp Poppy seeds
1tsp Fennel seeds
1tsp Black peppercorns
1tbsp Roasted gram/Pottukadalai

Grind all the ingredients from the list 'To Grind' as fine paste with enough water. Meanwhile boil enough water, add the tomatoes to it. Once the skin gets off the tomatoes, remove them.

Peel the tomatoes, deseed it and grind as fine paste.

Heat enough oil in a pan, fry the bay leaves and cinnamon stick.

Add chopped onions,green chillies and fry until its turns translucent and then add the ginger garlic paste, saute till the raw smell goes away.

Add the cooked butter beans and saute for few minutes.

Now add the tomato puree, saute for few minutes, add the coriander powder, turmeric powder and chilly powder, cook for few minutes.

Add the grounded masala paste to the simmering gravy. Add enough water and cook until the oil get separated from the gravy.

Add finally the chopped coriander leaves and put off the stove..

Serve hot.

I make a similar version without the spices and the butter beans we get is also different here. This is one dish which goes well with rice as well as rotis. Yum..

I love butter beans in a thick gravy but hubby doesn't like them so hardly make it at home. Its been ages since I had butte beans. Your gravy sounds very flavorful with coconut and all the spices.
