Puran Poli is well known as Obbattu or Holige, is quite a popular sweet flatbread which have their own place in every festivals. And this Poli is prepared with channadal, jaggery and coconut which is flavored with cardamom powder.However even toor dal is commonly used in the state of Karnataka,Gujarat and Tamil Nadu as well. But Moongdal is very much used in Andhra pradesh where this flatbread is called as bobbatlu or bakshalu. However savoury version of this fabulous sweetened flatbread do exists. And we call it fondly as Khara poli, which is definitely a tasty and dangerously delicious evening snack to enjoy with your favourite drink. Stuffed with spiced mashed channadal filling, this khara poli makes a filling snacks or starters depending upon how you serve this fantastic flatbread.
Filling:
2cups Channa dal
2 Garlic cloves
1tsp Roasted cumin powder
1/4tsp Turmeric powder
1 Green chilly
1/4cup Grated coconut
Am running this week's blogging marathon with kid's delight - Winter warmers as theme. Winter, this season is one of my favourite though the day light will be lesser than the other seasons. Winter makes me happy as its a festive season to have loads of fun and laughter with family and friends. And not to forget that Winter season calls for some delightful dishes especially for deep-frying and warm foods.After two Winter warmers, am finishing this week's theme with this dangerously delicious Khara poli which is filled with savoury channadal filling.My kids enjoyed them warm and loved it to the core.

2cups Wheat flour
Warm water (for kneading)
Salt
2tbsp Warm oil
Take the wheat flour,salt in a large bowl, add the warm water slowly and knead everything as a soft dough.
Add warm oil to the kneaded dough and keep aside for half an hour.
Make 6-7 medium sized balls from the wheat dough.
2cups Channa dal
2 Garlic cloves
1tsp Roasted cumin powder
1/4tsp Turmeric powder
1 Green chilly
1/4cup Grated coconut
Cook the channadal with turmeric powder with enough water until they turns soft.
Drain the cooked dal and let it cool completely. Once cooled, take the cooked dal with garlic cloves, grated coconut and green chilly in a food processor and grind as fine paste.
Add the roasted cumin powder, salt and mash the mix well with your hands. Keep aside.
Once the filling is ready, divide the dough as 6-7 balls. Turn them as medium sized discs with your hands.
Put enough filling inside and bring the edges to together to form a stuffed dough ball.
Now grease your hands and flatten them as thinner as possible.
Meanwhile heat a tawa, grease it with oil, drop the poli and cook on both side until they gets cooked.
Serve warm.

Pass that poli platter here. :) These sound like dal rotis and must have been super delicious with that spicy and flavorful filling.
The savory polis look just as sinful as the sweet ones :) Good idea of making dal parathas.
We make similar Chana Dal Paranthas without coconut. Need some pickle to finish these delicious polis!!

my mother in law makes these, we simply call them chana dal paratha. they taste superb with tea. Yours looks so tempting and making me make some for tomorrow morning breakfast.

I have made masala khara poli priya, this one with dal is super tempting! chance-e illai, i can imagine the spices with smooth chana dal filling, perfect evening snack with a hot cup of chai!
